Geocode in Google Sheets, free for real
Addresses to latitude and longitude, distances, drive times and a map, inside your spreadsheet.
GEOCODE, REVERSE_GEOCODE, DISTANCE and DRIVETIME as ready-made functions, a sidebar that geocodes a whole column in batches and picks up where it stopped, and a map with KML and GeoJSON export. Free within Google's own daily quota: no trial that expires, no account, no card.
The Marketplace listing is going through review. The install link will appear here once it is published.
Four functions, one sidebar, one map
Address to coordinates
=GEOCODE(A2; "ES")
Latitude and longitude in two cells. Add "lat", "lng" or "full" (with precision, normalized address and provider) as the third argument.
Coordinates to address
=REVERSE_GEOCODE(B2; C2; "en")
The formatted address nearest to a point, in the language you ask for.
Distance
=DISTANCE(A2; "Calle Alcalá 50, Madrid"; "driving"; "km")
Driving, walking, bicycling, transit or "straight" (a straight line that costs no quota). In km or miles.
Travel time
=DRIVETIME(A2; $F$1; "driving"; "min")
Minutes or hours between two addresses or two pairs of coordinates.
Geocode a whole column
The sidebar works in batches, can be closed and resumed, never overwrites a cell that has content, and adds a precision column and readable errors per row. How it works.
A map of your sheet
Points on OpenStreetMap, coloured by group and clustered, with a click for the label. Download it as KML for Google Earth or as GeoJSON. Map and export.
Free inside Google's quota
The add-on uses the Maps service of Google Apps Script under your own Google account. Google gives you about 1,000 geocodes a day on a personal account and 10,000 on Google Workspace, resetting at midnight Pacific Time. We add no limit on top, and there is no free trial that stops working after a few days.
- Results are cached, so the same address never spends quota twice.
"straight"distances are computed locally and cost nothing.- When the quota runs out you are told when it resets, and the sidebar resumes from the same row.
- Need more? Use your own key (Pro) and the limit becomes the one of your plan with the provider. Spend less quota.
Coming from Geocode by Awesome Table?
That add-on stopped working in 2026, and many sheets lost their coordinates. This one is a plain replacement for the job it did: put an address in a column, get latitude and longitude, see the points on a map.
- Nothing to sign up for and no credits to buy: it runs on your own Google quota.
- Your data stays in your sheet: addresses are not sent to our servers.
- Rows already filled are never overwritten, so you can re-run it on a sheet you have been editing.
- Pick up your old coordinates: the sidebar skips every row that already has latitude and longitude.
It is not an official replacement and has no connection with Awesome Table. Results come from Google Maps and can differ from those of other geocoders.
Frequently asked questions
Is it really free?
Yes. The add-on is free, with no account, no payment details and no trial that expires. It geocodes with Google's own Maps service inside your Google account, so what you can do each day is Google's quota (about 1,000 geocodes on personal accounts, 10,000 on Workspace), which costs you nothing. Pro adds auto-geocode, a distance matrix, route ordering, your own key and shared maps for people who need them.
Does it see my spreadsheet or my addresses?
No one on our side does. It runs inside your Google account: your addresses and coordinates are never sent to our servers. We only receive an anonymous daily usage ping, which you can turn off. The one exception is a shared map (Pro), which uploads only the points, labels and groups you choose to publish.
What do I do when the daily quota runs out?
The message says when it resets (midnight Pacific Time). The sidebar stops cleanly and you resume tomorrow, from a Workspace account, or with your own key (Pro). Repeated addresses are cached, and DISTANCE with "straight" costs no quota at all. See the quota page in the docs.
How accurate are the results?
As accurate as Google Maps for that address. Every row gets a precision level (exact, interpolated, center, approximate), so you can filter the doubtful ones, and a provider column that says where the result came from.
The formula shows a parse error in my Spanish or European spreadsheet.
Sheets with a Spanish, French, German or similar locale separate arguments with a semicolon: =GEOCODE(A2; "ES"; "lat"). Commas inside the quotes stay as they are.
What permissions does it ask for?
Access to the current spreadsheet only (not your Drive), permission to connect to external services (ping, Pro licence and shared maps) and to show menus and dialogs. For Pro only: your Google account email and permission to create the trigger of auto-geocode. None is a restricted scope.
Can I put the results on my own map or website?
Coordinates from Google come with Google's terms. The add-on writes a provider column, shows the required notice on its map, and lets you use your own OpenCage or Geoapify key (open data) in Pro. Read the terms of the provider before you publish its results.
